Vinoptima 2004 Gewurztraminer Ormond Reserve
Robert Parker: 94 Points

We can’t think of a better wine to serve with your Thanksgiving dinner! Robert Parker wrote, “A stunning nose of honey, melted butter and lemongrass, the palate suddenly shows an upsurge in concentration with brilliant harmony and focus. It remains taut and imbued with nervosite: a great skill in such a flamboyant aromatic.”
Having steered his family company to one of New Zealand’s successful producers, Nick Nobilo could have enjoyed a peaceful retirement after the company was sold to BRL Hardy. But instead he has dedicated his life to producing New Zealand’s finest Gewurztraminer from his 9.7-hectare estate in Gisborne, split into two blocks, the first planted in 2000 and the second in 2007 using budwood that Nick had been propagating for over 25 years. The winery is so clean you could eat your breakfast off it, the 1,200L oak German oval foudres playing a key role in extracting the best out of this aromatic grape. The good news is that Nick is well on his way to achieving his dream because this was a stunning expression of Gewurztraminer, the wine adopting an Alsatian style rather than anything from the New World.

Pininfarina 2005 Vino Rosso, Napa Valley
Wine Enthusiast: 90 Points

The name Pininfarina has become synonymous with the pinnacle of quality, innovation and beauty. Since 1930, the Italian design, engineering and manufacturing firm has seduced the automotive industry with their contributions to Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia and Alfa Romeo among others.
A move to the Napa Valley wine scene seemed only natural when Paolo Pininfarina partnered up with the winemaking Heck Family to create a world-class Super Tuscan-styled blend called Vino Rosso.
The 2005 Pininfarina Napa Valley Vino Rosso is a great expression of the character of the Napa Valley. The aromas start off with a hint of vanilla and nutmeg spice, which quickly gives way to black currant and raspberry aromas which meld with background aromas of ripe blueberries and a hint of violets. In the mouth, the first impression is of concentrated fruit, particularly black currants and blueberries. The tannins are ripe, sweet and chewy, giving the wine a very generous depth and structure, without harshness. This balance of fruit and ripe, fat tannins is one of the hallmarks of the best Napa Valley wines. The finish is smooth and elegant, with enough tannin to suggest a decade of life and beyond.
