WINE OF THE WEEK – GREAT CAB FOR ABOUT $30 – Sequoia Grove 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon

Sequoia Grove 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon

I’m always asked for a good Cabernet around $30, which seems to be hard at times to find, that is if you can’t see the trees through the forest. That leads me to the Sequoia Grove Cabernet Sauvignon; a Cab that I have had on three different occasions in the past year and it has never disappointed. Big and rich, filled with ripe black fruit and a deep garnet color. It has a very nice balance of fruit and oak tannins that are easy on the palate and a long finish that lingers. This is a wine that compares nicely to much more expensive Cabernets at just $34.98 at Amazing Grapes.

I had a chance to visit the Sequoia Grove Winery over Memorial Day weekend on my last Sonoma-Napa trip. It sits right in the heart of the valley floor in the Rutherford AVA, just a stone’s throw from Silver Oak Napa, which as you know is a region well known for award-winning Cabernets. Time and again I have recommended this to friends and they have always come back for more. The Wine Advocate gives the 2007 Sequoia Grove Winery 89, and I give the 2008 a 91 and a best buy under $40.

Winery Tasting Notes: Dark black in color, the nose gives aromas of red cherry and blackberries with sweet vanilla, nutmeg, and cigar box notes. There is a hint of crushed flower petals and notes of pencil lead and peppercorn in the background. The palate has a big, round silky arc with smooth tannins and impeccable balance. Flavors of blackberry and spice blend into a smoky finish.
